“I’m asking you to believe. Not just in my ability to bring about real change in Washington… I’m asking you to believe in yours.”
Masthead of the index page to BarackObama.com

I want to believe… I really do…
I was SO excited, to be living in a time when other people were just so gosh darn excited about the political process. Excited to have a voice, and to be those agents of change Senator Obama so often talks about… I saw, in the Senator’s campaign, an almost nostalgic longing for a time when people actually believed, in their rights as American citizens, in their ability to make their voices heard and to make the course of this nation a matter of public discourse… I foresaw a time, not yet here but coming, when we would return to the ideas of the founding fathers, when the will of the majority would trump the tyranny of the minority…
Apparently, it is not yet to be… Because the change the Senator seems to be talking about is his own ability to change his positions, the very positions that had gotten so many people so excited in the first place…
There’s the issue of campaign financing… Senator Obama has decided to forego accepting public money to finance the next phase of the campaign, in spite of his former vows to go with public financing as a way to stem the tide of campaigns run amok, among other reasons… Now, if he’s able to raise substantially more money privately than would be provided through the public arena, it might just be good common sense to go with the larger number… It would just make good fiduciary sense, as well as being politically expedient… I will not argue the moral implications of ‘political expediency’ here… Just by raising the question of the morals of political expediency pretty much says how I feel about them… The issue is that he said he would do the one thing, and then he didn’t…
How is this a change from the way Washington has worked for generations now…?
There’s the issue of illegal wire-tapping… Senator Obama has decided to support legislation granting immunity to the telecommunication companies that cooperated with President Bush’s’ decision to circumvent FISA, and wire-tap without the legally required warrants from a court of law… In spite of his vow to fight such legislation during the primaries, the Senator has now changed his mind… He said he would do the one thing, and then he didn’t…
How is this a change from the way Washington has worked for generations now…?
The President broke the law… Companies that cooperated with him, thus, also broke the law… Ignorance of the law is, when you or I break a rule, no excuse… Breaking a law because someone higher in the food chain told you to is, when you or I break a rule, no excuse… Now they want to grant immunity to those companies who broke that law…
Is this to be an across the board retroactive immunity, for everyone…? Will I now be given immunity for parking tickets received in the past, because my girlfriend (and it don’t GET any higher in the food chain than that) told me to go ahead and park there…? Will I be granted immunity for that speeding ticket I received in the late 70’s, the last time I received such a ticket…? What about that phase of shoplifting I went through as a pre-teen, so many years ago it almost makes me blush…? Am I to now be absolved for that, along with everyone else who went through a similar phase in his or her life, only to turn it around…?
No…?
Why not…? That seems to be the message that is being sent here…
Oh, wait… I get it… It’s because I don’t have seventy-eleven squillion dollars to spend on lobbyists to push for such an immunity, and to spend on the campaigns of elected officials who promise reform, and change, with the outcome being the tried and true course of changing their minds when the deal is done…
How is this a change from the way Washington has worked for generations now…?
Apparently, the only change the Senator is talking about is the change those of us with OUT seventy-eleven squillion dollars, or a $150 million dollar severance package from Wall Street for being FIRED from the job, is the change we’ll be begging on the streets, as the economy continues to tank while it’s business as usual in Washington…

“Liberty and justice for all… All men are created equal, with certain inalienable rights… Among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness…”
I don’t know whether to laugh or cry…
