A sign of change…

There’s a change in the way things will be done from now on… At least in New York state…

A few nights ago, just before midnight, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed into law a bill that will, among other things, allow the Gay community to enter into marriage, much as the rest of mankind has enjoyed since time immemorial…

There are, of course, detractors and nay-sayers galore, with (I’m sure) the inevitable legal challenges yet to come. Yet they were partying into the wee hours that night outside the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village, the acknowledged birthplace of the gay movement all those years ago. A thing so many people had hoped for and waited for and worked towards for all those years has finally come to pass. Equal treatment under the law is to be strived for, insisted upon and, finally, applauded when it eventually happens. The only question that really needs addressing is why it took so long to happen… I do not here propose to entertain the excuses proffered by these naysayers, nor do I wish to argue the issue from one side or the other; the thing is done. Get over it and move on, people. But I do propose to pursue what I perceive as the prohibitively perilous platform whence these perennial poopy-pates perpetually posit their putrescence on the populace.

Try saying that quickly, three times in a row. Just make sure you have a towel to wipe down your monitor, especially if you went to the Sylvester the Cat School of Public Speaking… Heavens to Murgatroid…

If we claim to live in a country in which the rule of law, and all men (and women) are created equal (within the definitions of applying the law uniformly) and have certain inalienable rights and no one shall be discriminated against (because of sex, religion, sexual orientation, creed, hair style (except for maybe the Trumpster), length of toenails, Mac vs. PC, alma mater, paper or plastic, level of tanned skin after Memorial Day, real Jazz vs. that lite crap personified by Kenny G, and a host of other things which never, ever affect the way we treat each other…) and everyone has the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, then the fact that a portion of the population is excluded from these happy thoughts due to their sexual orientation or skin color or creed is a screaming contradiction, and makes everyone who would do the excluding a hypocrite of the most sickening type. Do not talk to me about a ‘Fundamental Restoration of America’ if you are going to exclude ANYONE because they are ‘different’ or happen to have their own ideas about… oh, I don’t know… ANYTHING… You talk about living in a free society while you do everything within your power to make that society anything but free…

A question, if I may… Does this so-called ‘Fundamental Restoration of America’ mean turning back the clock all the way to the founders? Because that would entail a return to settling matters of honor with duels in the country, any and everyone thinking that the way to settle cheating at cards is to pull out a gun (which we are well on the way to ‘restoring’ with our concealed weapons laws around the country), might makes right, anyone with the right connections can take your property or livelihood or life (which is also happening around the world, as well as here; look up the case of the people who had their houses seized via eminent domain in Connecticut because a developer wanted to build a shopping center)… Slavery, anyone…? Or shall we merely turn back the clock a hundred years or so, before all this ‘socialism’ reared its ugly head…? Then no women would be able to vote or hold office or (probably) hold a job or do anything that wasn’t first approved by her husband or father… Is that what you want to return to…? Does ANYONE honestly expect the Pale One (or maybe PalinDrone (“Sarah Palin for President… NOT…” which strictly speaking isn’t a palindrome, if you want to be a stickler for the rules, but I maintain that it reads the same both forwards and backwards; “Sarah Palin for President… NOT…” is the same thing as “NOT Sarah Palin for President…” Do you see where I’m coming from there…?), Princess Poopy-Pants,  Skippy the Wonder Rock, IntelliPuck, American HerStory major, pick your own poetic pejorative…) to accept a return to the days when she wouldn’t even be allowed to talk in company, much less in public…? I certainly don’t see it… No, I think she feels that she can dictate just exactly what people should feel and believe, much along the lines of Mao, of Stalin or Hitler… or Simon Cowell… She will restore America only just so far, as long as she can still be the absolute center of attention, while cursing those who actually give her the attention she’s so desperately begging for….

What a spoiled little brat…

Calling yourself an ‘American’ or a ‘free society’ comes with certain responsibilities and a fair amount of baggage… We are automatically tarred with the consequences of decisions taken before our time, decisions being taken for us now (with or without our imput) and the impressions other members of our free society leave upon other citizens of other countries around the planet. It is grossly unfair that I am labeled an ugly American (How do they know…? Is my computer’s camera active…? Who’s been talking…?) just because some other ugly American went to Paris and didn’t know how to behave in someone else’s home… But that’s the price you have to pay for the freedom to even be allowed to go to Paris in the first place.

Of course, many people don’t see it that way. Many people feel that because they ARE American they can do whatever they want, whenever and wherever they want, without consequence… They feel a sense of entitlement with regards to their actions, their thoughts and prejudices, which just really sends the rest of the planet right off the deep end. It seems there’s no shortage of spoiled brats these days…

“Would you like another cup of Tea, dear…?”

Just for the record, and in the interest of accuracy, it’s not just the Americans who do this…

Everybody on the planet has a preference for people who are more similar to them than not; it’s a comfort level that doesn’t require nearly as much energy on their part. Besides, you can then say what you want; they’ll understand… They’re just like you are… The problem arises when you insist on the right to say whatever you want whether or not they’re just like you are… Some of us never progressed beyond the social equivalent of the playground of our youth, with its more than fair share of bullies…

I think the reason the English are so popular among Americans is that it’s the country seen as closest to what we are. I can speak first hand, from very recent experience, as to just how different they are, and yet disturbingly similar, in all the wrong areas… If anything, it drives home the point that Americans are alone on this planet. So are the English… And the French… And the Chinese… Quite honestly, China presents anything but a unified front, once you’re actually IN China. They’re all individually driven by the same prejudices and greeds and hatreds every other people on Earth are driven by. Ultimately, all of us are alone on this planet, even when we’re in the middle of a crowded room, a nation or a planet. That’s what makes the Chinese and the French human… That is also what makes, amongst many others, the Gay community human…

The Gay community wants security and good jobs and life and liberty and the pursuit of happiness just as much as the most ardent Teetotler; that they don’t want a Teetotler version of these things only proves that they as human as everyone else, and more human than some. But the important part of this discussion, the point that seems to me to be the one overriding factor and the point that is constantly being left out of the discussion, is that they also happen to be full citizens of the United States of America, with all the same rights as women and African-Americans and Native Americans and naturalized citizens… I repeat, they… are… citizens… and they are human; they are not bug-eyed monsters from the Planet GoobersRUs 16.397 (Hey, ya’ll, watch this…) in the far reaches of the Fire Island Galaxy… I may be wrong in this, but I have yet to hear of the Gay community proposing that we give up oxygen as being hopelessly unfashionable and start breathing helium (it would be an amusing, in much the same way that Alvin and the Chipmunks are amusing, but not entirely successful exercise…), or that we need a fundamental restoration back to the days before we all crawled from the primordial ooze and thus should be breathing watery slime…. Nor have I heard the Gay community insist that the way to solve the world’s food problems is to return to the values of our fathers and allow the rest of the planet to starve while we continue to get fatter and fatter… No, the Gay community is as human as the rest of us, with the same human needs and wants… The fact that some people have trouble viewing them as such points to more of a problem amongst those doing the viewing.

Of course, this legislation is just one more step towards the goal; it is by no means the end of the journey. State acknowledgment is not the same as Federal protection; that is yet to come. But it’s a step in the right direction; a small step forward for man, not the giant leap backwards for mankind that some would have us make…

If we are to be a nation of free citizens, then we have to be a nation in which the citizens are free… Free for all to pursue their lives and happiness, the same as everyone else in that same nation. Either we are that nation or we are not. But to insist that we ARE that nation while systematically denying those freedoms to certain segments of society is an hypocrisy of the most obvious, most blatant and immature type.

It rather makes one nostalgic for the old days, when you could take a nice little ride out to the country, doesn’t it…?
