Happy Birthday…

Today marks the anniversary of President Ulysses S. Grant signing the legislation that made Yellowstone our first national park.
Yellowstone turns the ripe young age of 144 today…

Which is, of course, patently absurd…
People have been living in the Yellowstone region for about 3000 years now.

And the planet is something on the order of 4.54 billion years old…
Give or take a measly .003 billion years, or so…
That’s around 3,000,000, for those of you who are counting…

Still, todays date is significant for the fact that it’s the first time we in this country set aside a portion of the land for the preservation of its unique qualities, and beauty.

Eventually we just went ahead and established a National Park System, across the country, which will turn 100 years young in August of this year.

A mere blip of time, cosmically speaking.
And now some people want to undo all of that…
Take the land and give it back to those it was stolen from…

Well… not really…
There never seems to be much thought given to the Native Americans, when such posturing begins to occur.
The posers just want to be able to use any land they see, as they see fit… politically and economically speaking…

Turn back the clock (they say), to a time when (they think) people were free to do whatever they wanted to do with the land…
Not even the native peoples of this continent ever believed that…

Still…
Any little thing we can grasp at in the way of a remembrance should be, um… remembered.

Please celebrate todays anniversary.
And the one upcoming in August.
Go visit a National Park any chance you get; and honor the mind-boggling variety of the this humble little planet we call home.

You may not be able to for very much longer…
