An Appreciation

Happy Birthday…

Today is the day on which we remember a particularly talented song writer from a past era.
Below is a video made from a performance of almost twenty years ago.

And this was his his first public performance in the twenty years prior to that.
Watch for the rather prominent word slinger they managed to hoodwink into introducing him.

Yes, today is the birthday of Tom Lehrer, who caused many a guffaw in an age when we really didn’t know if it was okay to laugh or not.

As usual, I was late to the party… being too young (both physically and in all other ways) to know what the fuss was all about.

You know… this whole concept of being “fashionably late” to events is really starting to cramp my style…

Anywhoo…

Wherever you are on this day, this day is the day that you should break out those chaps, whips and chains, as you dance to that time-honored song – The Masochism Tango.

And then there are those who might prefer to don their very best pontifical drag, and flap about as they celebrate this day with the Vatican Rag.

Happy Birthday, Tom

Genuflect, genuflect, genuflect…!!!

  1. When I was a student at a Catholic college for women, in the 1960’s, my friends and I played Tom’s records constantly as we puffed away down in the “smokers’ lounge”, all to the consternation of the nuns who supervised the dorm. It was so cool and risqué to sing his songs, as the changes worked by Vatican II were a matter of controversy at the time. We took Tom Lehrer as a model and made up some of our own songs, satirizing things like our required courses in Theology….i.e. “There’s no ism like Thomism….” Great fun listening to these, today. Thanks!
