On todays date in 1910, the first performance of the eerily haunting (and I mean that in all the best senses of the words) Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis was given in London.
The work is by the British composer Ralph Vaughn Williams.
The composer led the London Symphony at the premier.
I’ve written on this work before (more than a year ago, now) but it stands to be repeated.
A work of sublime beauty, I’ve never met anyone who knows of the piece who didn’t love it – whose eyes didn’t glaze at the thought of it’s passages…
It is one of the most beautiful pieces I was ever graced to be a part of, as a member of an orchestra; and it has never paled for me since that day.
