No words…

I have no words for the last…
Well, as near to two years as makes no difference…

We’ve just come through a cycle of nonsense, of accusations and lies, of vitriol and hatred spewed across our land, at any and everyone whom we deemed as different…  as ‘not us’…

And because ‘they’ are different from ‘us’, we don’t understand them.
And we fear what we don’t understand…

And we kill what we fear…

So we attack and revile the family of a soldier who gave his life for this country, because they’re ‘not like us…’

And we attack and belittle an entire section of the population as rapists and murderers, because they’re ‘not like us…’

And we belittle more than half of the population, by allowing a mysogynist, a serial philanderer and a man on his third marriage to preach to us about family values.
And to deride the women who are accusing him of sexually predatory behavior as ‘not attractive enough’ to have been abused.

And our answer to a stalling and obstructionist Congress – whose only goal for the past 8 years has been to block any and everything the sitting President has tried to accomplish – our answer to this do-nothing legislative body, is to elect even more of them.

And to give them more power, and more ability and opportunity, to run rough-shod over civil liberties and Constitutionally protected freedoms.

Because the sitting President has a different skin color than ‘normal’ people…
… than people ‘like us…’

And he belongs to a different political party…
And they’re certainly not ‘like us…’

And now hatred has won the day…
And friends around the world will ask me what I was thinking.
What have I done by voting for this man…

But I didn’t…

I couldn’t have, even had I wanted to…
Not and still call myself a member of a civilized society.

Because hatred has no place in civilized society.
Disagreement, certainly…
Even sincerely held beliefs of a contrary nature to the rest of society…

But hatred…?

Hatred is counterproductive to the prosperous working of societies, in general.
Hatred is killing, and crime and poverty, and homelessness and disease.
Hatred is the complete and utter antidote to civilization.

Hatred is suicide, to the continuation of man upon this planet.

And we’ve just collectively, as a nation, given the finger to what ever progress had been made in the last 50 years…

Yesterday, certain state government officials were boasting – actually bragging – about how much the black vote had been suppressed from 4 years ago, while simultaneously crowing about how much the white turnout had increased…

And the problem doesn’t seem to be a naive Supreme Court (and God help us on that front…) gutting the voting rights act…
And the problem doesn’t seem to be historically segregationist communities finding new ways to continue old practices…

The problem is that they don’t even see the problem…

And on this anniversary of Kristallnacht, the nation of America has elected a man who has for the last two years flirted with, if not actively embraced, Fascism…

And we can’t get beyond our own petty hatreds to learn from our past mistakes.

And I can only hope, and fervently pray, that, as in most things…

… this, too, shall pass…
