An Appreciation

No birthdays today…

But we do remember the premier of two seminal musical works in the Romantic vein, even tough their respective premiers happened long after the Romantic era had been written off.

First we have Rachmaninoff’s 3rd Piano Concerto, premiered on this date in 1909, with the composer himself as the soloist…

What I wouldn’t give to have been there for that performance.

What’s really interesting is how fast this performance is… as if the present day conception of the piece is completely different from what the composer intended…

Sergei clocks this in at an incredibly svelte 30 minutes and change, while other performances take as long 48 minutes…

Quite a difference…

The other premier to celebrate an anniversary today is the second symphony by Howard Hanson…

This piece was used, to eerie effect, in the movie Alien…
I already knew and loved the piece, and to hear it in a movie that rather scared the bejeebers out of me just gave it added power…

I’ve already ‘quoted’ an image of Rachmaninoff in the past, so that’s why I went with Hanson this time… the image ‘quoted’ can be found here.
