Today marks the anniversary of the day President Ulysses S. Grant signed the Act of Dedication law, which created the nation’s first National Park.
It was a boffo idea….
Look it up.
… where was I…?
Oh yeah… Yellowstone.
Most people people didn’t believe the descriptions of Yellowstone coming back.
They couldn’t possibly be true.
East coast papers refused to run those descriptions, saying they weren’t in the habit of printing fiction.
But when the reports were verified – by a government commission, no less – everyone thought it might be a good idea to protect this landscape.
Of course, people had been living in what was to become our first park for at least 11,000 years prior to 1872.
But never mind that…
Happy Birthday, Yellowstone…
